ONDC Food Delivery Apps take on Zomato & Swiggy!

Open Network for Digital Commerce Apps

What does ONDC mean?

Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is an initiative aiming at promoting open networks for all aspects of the exchange of goods and services over digital or electronic networks.

What are the ONDC benefits?

Benefits of Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC)

Consumers can
discover any seller, product, or service by using any compatible application or platform, thus increasing freedom of choice for consumers
.

How is ONDC similar to UPI ?

The best way to understand ONDC is through UPI. UPI is a platform that allows for payments between users’ banks accounts. It is accessed through apps like GPay, PhonePe, Paytm and many others. Similarly, ONDC allows users users to order goods online from a variety of sellers. Through the same platform, users can buy goods and services from different apps. The order can be fulfilled by any e-commerce store or seller, and will be delivered by a different delivery partner. Like there’s no single app for UPI, there’s no single app for ONDC.

ONDC Food Delivery Apps take on Zomato & Swiggy!

Government’s Food Delivery Apps pick up pace as they offer Better Discounts compared to Zomato and Swiggy!

ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce) is back in the news as it crosses 10,000 food delivery orders in a day! Also, because the ONDC online food delivery service is now available in major Indian cities.

You can order food from ONDC restaurants via PaytmPincode (only in Bangalore), and MagicPin apps only, as of now. MagicPin is the official ONDC Food Delivery App as Paytm just hosts this service (you will see ‘powered by MagicPin’ at the bottom). Thus, both apps have a similar service. Besides, Pincode has been launched by the PhonePe app.

ONDC Food Delivery Apps are currently providing heavy discounts + Free Delivery (upto 4 kms) + Flat ₹50 off (can use Coupon "ONDC50") as part of their promotional campaigns. However, they levy Taxes and a Packaging Fee at checkout. I found Packaging Fees on some Mumbai restaurants to be around ₹30 (nearly a delivery fee), and that too for 1/2 items (burgers, sandwiches, etc)! However, the final price is way lesser when compared to Zomato and Swiggy, which is why it is recommended.

What are ONDC Food Delivery Apps, and Why are they Here?

The ONDC Food Delivery Apps connect you directly to the restaurants. A single app hosts multiple ONDC restaurants where prices are decided by the restaurants themselves following ONDC’s T&Cs. The government has got ONDC to break the monopoly of Zomato and Swiggy. This will help people get food delivery at reasonable prices along with access to more restaurants / food stalls.

ONDC Food Delivery Apps vs Zomato/Swiggy

I have picked up some promotional food items (Mumbai restaurants) from Paytm/MagicPin ONDC food delivery section and compared their prices with those on Zomato/Swiggy.

Food Item

ONDC Price

Zomato/Swiggy Price

2 Burgers (Bun Tikki + Spicy Aloo Crunch)

₹119

Wendy’s

₹139

₹115

Thus, you can see that ONDC is truly delivering at a very lesser price comparatively. However, the restaurant list here is just 25% of Zomato/Swiggy which is where it needs improvement. Also, how efficient is its delivery service, is a question! Not to forget, Zomato Coupons and Swiggy Coupons are the reasons why people enjoy them.

How to Order Food Online via ONDC Apps?

As told earlier, currently there are 3 ONDC food delivery apps in Paytm, Pincode, and MagicPin from where you can order just like you do in Zomato and Swiggy. For Paytm users, search “ONDC”, and select ‘Food’ under ‘ONDC Store’. MagicPin App users will get the ONDC food delivery section on the homepage itself via a banner. It also has its own food delivery section (popular for discounts) so don’t get confused! Finally, Bangalore users can download the Pincode app or find it in their PhonePe app itself.
